24+ Months Out: Foundation
Before the application cycle begins, your foundation determines what you can apply with:
- Complete prerequisites (1 year each of bio, gen chem, organic chem, physics, biochemistry; English; math/statistics — varies by school)
- Begin clinical exposure (shadowing, scribing, MA work) and research
- Build relationships with science faculty who could write letters
- Start studying for the MCAT in your junior year if you plan to apply that summer
12 Months Out: Ramp
The 12 months before AMCAS opens are where you set up to apply early:
- Summer to fall (previous year): Continue clinical hours and research. Begin MCAT prep if you have not.
- Fall: Decide on application timing (this cycle vs. gap year). Begin drafting personal statement themes.
- December–January: Take the MCAT (or finalize a January–April test date). Begin Work/Activities list draft.
Spring of Application Year: Letters and MCAT
Spring is the busiest preparation period:
- February–March: Ask for letters of recommendation. Send writer packets.
- March–April: Finalize MCAT (if not yet taken). Polish personal statement.
- April: Submit applications to your committee letter (if applicable). Build school list (15–25 schools typical).
May–June: Primary Submission
AMCAS opens in early May. Submission opens in late May. AMCAS begins transmitting verified applications to schools in late June.
- Submit AMCAS as early as you are confident the application is polished — late May / early June.
- Order transcripts to AMCAS in early May before you submit.
- Verify your AMCAS application carefully after submission — review the verified GPA and course classifications.
July–October: Secondaries
Most schools send secondary essays automatically within 2–6 weeks of AMCAS verification. Expect 15–25 secondary essays across your school list. Aim to return each one within 2 weeks.
Pre-write the 6 most common secondary prompts in May and June so you can respond quickly. Returning secondaries within 2 weeks is the most controllable variable in interview timing.
Fall–Spring: Interviews and Decisions
Interview invitations typically arrive from August through January. Interview days run from August through March. Some top programs interview into April.
Decisions roll out continuously. Most acceptances land between October and April. The AMCAS Choose Your Medical School deadline is April 30 for committing to one program; final wait-list activity continues into June and July.
